Pentatonic Scales |
|
Pentatonic Scales are scales of five tones. They can be minor and major, they are actually the same, and are just inverted differently.
Major Pentatonic
To form major pentatonic scales, we will use the corresponding major scale, more precisely its 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th degrees. So basically, a major pentatonic scale is a major scale without its 4th and 7th degrees. If you can't read staff, check this course to learn how.

Minor Pentatonic
Just as the major pentatonic, we will use the corresponding minor scale to find our minor pentatonic. We will need its 1st, 3rd, 4th,5th and 7th degrees. So it is a minor scale without its 2nd and 6th degrees. Look at this C minor pentatonic scale:
The C major pentatonic and the A minor pentatonic use the same notes, just as the F# major pentatonic and the D# minor pentatonic. It is because any key and its relative will always use the same 5 notes for their pentatonic. Key relatives have the same notes, however their root are different, like the C major scale and the A minor scale.

To tell if a song uses a major or a minor scale, you will have to listen to the chord in the background. Most songs will revolve around the root of the scale, you will hear its chord more often. The other difference will be the tone of the song. Minors are usually more sad and dissonant than majors which are mostly resolved and happy.
And with this lesson, we are done with scales. There are actually way more scales, these ones are the most used in the modern occidental musical system.
